From Supernovas to Summer Adventures: Cosmic Activities for Ages 6–9

One of the most powerful ideas in Stardust and You is also one of the simplest:
You are connected to everything.
The stars. The Earth. Plants. Animals. Each other.
For ages 6–9, summer is a wonderful time to turn that big idea into hands-on exploration.
1. Become a Stardust Scientist
Bring a notebook outside and write:
Today I discovered…
Look for:
- something growing
- something changing
- something moving
- something surprising
Ask:
“How are we connected to this?”
2. Draw Your Timeline Through the Universe
Create a giant paper timeline:
- Stars form
- Supernova
- Earth forms
- Life begins
- You arrive
Talk about how long the universe has been creating.
3. Build a Universe in a Jar
Layer:
- sand
- pebbles
- leaves
- water
- glitter (optional)
Label it:
Everything Is Connected
Use it to start conversations about elements and life.
4. Invent a Planet That Could Support Life
Draw:
- weather
- plants
- creatures
- colors
- landscapes
Then ask:
“What would visitors learn there?”
5. Make Element Detective Cards
Choose everyday objects:
- apple
- bicycle
- pencil
- water bottle
Research what materials make them up.
Talk about how all matter has a story.
6. Create a Summer Wonder Journal
End each day with:
- Something I noticed
- Something I learned
- Something that made me feel connected
The universe can feel huge.
But one of the lessons of Stardust and You is that children already belong inside it.
Summer simply gives us more time to notice.
